Just a few thoughts on a "vocal minority" of players I've seen on CSS. This is not
typically most players, but a few which have the ability to sap the fun from the
game. Fortunately, the vast majority of the player do not, thankfully, fall into
any of these categories (at least not all of the time), so it keeps the game fun,
entertaining, and challenging - all of which I appreciate.
Here are a few examples:
1. People who win, but then degrade others who they just beat. This usually
looks like, "pawn't you noobs", "I am the bomb", "you guys suck", etc...
I like to call the category: those who don't win gracefully. This is usually 12 year
old boys whose parents have done a poor job of supervising their children, or worse,
when the child is emulating their parents. Typically, they live in a trailer park
and have single parent households.
However, this may also be a 40+ man who is playing the game in his shorts and dark
socks with no life. Like all things on the internet, it's difficult to determine
who is on the other end of the line. Regardless, this person has an elevated sense
of their actual skill...or worth as a human.
2. People who lose and are not happy about it. This usually ends up in simple
comments, like "bad game", "gay", "fuck you", "that was bullshit", etc...
I like to call this category: those who don't lose gracefully. Mostly, these are
folks who are relatively new / unskilled and are frustrated by the game. They
typically accuse better player of "hacking" as they cannot fathom the skill required
to get above a 0.2 KD. This type of player can vary in age, but is most typically a
10-12 year old boy who is new to the game or, at times, thinks the game is real. See
#4.
3. Mic spammers. This can take several forms, none good. Sometimes, it's
endless rants with cussing and racism (see either #1 or #2 above), but also includes
pointless comments about their game or negative comments about who just raped
them...for each and every time they are killed.
The demographic for this type of player is usually a 12 year old old just got a
Turtle Beach headset and feels (incorectly) that the rest of the world actually
wants to hear whatever thought they choose to spew. Naturally, this is in error,
but it's difficult to tell this self-centered, internet-anonymous child that their
endless, pointless, often racist comments are not welcome lest you become their
newest target for this endless dogma.
4. Players who think the game is real. Interestingly, this is also usually a
12 year old (or similar maturity level) person who ties their self worth to their
performance in the game. They are unable to enjoy the game, the camaraderie, and
the sheer awe of watching a very skilled player. If a person knifes them, they
can't see the beauty of the move or compliment the player for a good job, they tend
to want retribution or to get very angry. They are not able to differentiate the
game from real life. It's really a very sad thing to watch and may require years of
clinical help.
I often dream of a world where the anonymity of the internet is stipped away and
folks are actually held accountable for their behavior. It would be interesting /
entertaining to be able to go to the house of these offenders and appropriately
discipline them for this behavior...and ensure their parents are also held
accountable. If you are out of your parents house and you fall into any of these
categories (or other, similar category), then you need to reassess what you are
trying to get from this game and, perhaps, start to play another game which does not
impact you in this way. I'd recommend Monopoly, but I'm afraid you might turn that
into a contact sport...
Hey Tolik. We've all done it from time to time, I think. For example, I don't like to get knifed by a little kid who spews racist trash talk while doing it. This has led me to get pretty pissed off and start to verbally spar with him...which is really not a good idea. However, we just don't do it all of the time.
If you tell someone to STFU while they are afflicted, this will not work and only serve to egg them on. The anonymity you have with an online game (or anything online, really) allows folks to act in a way which has no real consequences, so they just do what they want without any fear of reprisal.
Yes, we have some controls (mute, vote ban, spec'ing them, or sometimes we get lucky and an admin is online and takes immediate action), but in general, it's a tough problem. I guess I just have to deal with it...and my original post is the first step in my 12 step program.
I suppose if I had more skill as an hacker, I could figure out their IP address and then triangulate their location and pay them a visit....I've seen it done in movies. :-)
I'm confused, is this a ligitimate issue someone is having or just an aimless topic?
Please feel free to comment on my Map Upload threads. Your comments and suggestions help me make better maps for the DoGz!!

Aimless rant / observations. It's actually an original post. I guess it sounds a lot like another post from before, but not a cut/paste.
Online punks are just something you have to, unfortunately, deal with. I was just making fun of them…sort of a release and thought others might enjoy. That's all.
