New Computer
Kush
So I have been looking into getting a new computer due to my other one that lags like a bitch crashing on me. Now I'm not that techy so if I could get some input from those of you who are a little bit in the know,I would appreciate it. I have some specs for the Comp. that I want to build that were given to me by a friend and I want to hear thoughts from anyone and everyone.

here go some specs:
Lite-On 24x DVD Burner
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD
ASRock 870 Extreme3 SATA 6Gb/s Motherboard
OCZ ModXStream 600w Power Supply
A-DATA 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM
AMD Phenom II x4 955 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
AMD HIS 6850 1GB Video Card

note: this isnt just for css

not bad should work fine

ew.....intel>amd your ram could be alittle faster, say 1800 or 2100 but the gfx card is a good choice in the performance/cost aspect. Yet, that should work fine. If your building this yourself check the newegg DIY bundles, they have some great deals there

TD>NewEgg on pricing and customer support.

One suggestion the 6850 says it needs at least a 400w PSU and the 955BE is a 140w proc, thats really tight on a 600w I would suggest a 750w instead just to be safe, the Antec Earthwatt 750w is 15.00 more but it gives you more headroom.

What's your budget and I'll see what I can put together, I have to do some research anyway, I have a guy that wants me to build him another computer, lol I just finished his last one 3 weeks ago, he dropped 1700 on it, but he wants the next one for speed Smile it gets in your blood just like hot rods. His last computer scored 22000 on 3DMark vantage performance tests so it's by no means slow. Just let me know I'll see what you can do on your budget, you'd be surprised whats out there if you do a little poking around.

You're going to need to consider the case, and also the heatsink. I have the Phenom II x4 965 in am3, and went with the Xigmatek S1283 cooler. It's something you have to consider, because some of the massive coolers take up space. It sucks to get a case and have it not be able to house it all.

Research into which coolers work for that CPU, and try to find a couple of reviews or comments online about workable cases. Some of those coolers can't really be arranged right, ie can only blow the air up to the top of the case or out of the back, which sucks if you don't have a top fan in your case. (For me I went with that cooler with the Antec 300 and it works, but when it comes down to space with the hard drives and the graphics card it gets uncomfortable tight to the point where I almost junked it.)

Also, you may have to consider going with the hd5870 instead of the 6850 unless if you're going to crossfire the 68xx anything in the future. Although the hd5870's are older, they have as much horsepower as the 68xx except if they're crossfired. (At least from what what I can remember when I was poking around on specs when I was thinking of upgrading)

I too would also suggest a 750w bare min PSU.

Another suggestion: Keep all the boxes from the build. You never know when you're going to need to RMA parts Grin

Sorry, but from my experience, Amazon and Newegg > TigerDirect. I've dealt with enough shit from that place to last me quite awhile.

I have to agree with Herpes on Newegg, I can order thing there that Tiger doesn't carry, before I bought my SSDs I was looking for some 500GB WD RE4 drives to RAID0 I found them on Newegg and Amazon, but Tiger had none.

I say if you are going with an AMD the 955 is a solid proc, mine has been solid for 3 years and from day one it has been OC'ed from 3.2 to 3.8 on air, never see temps above 53c even at 100% load during validation.

As for whether Intel >< AMD or ATI/AMD >< nVidia, it really depends on the rigs purpose, I have built 30-40 rigs of varying cost over the last couple years and IMHO they both have their place you just have to know your parts, and plan accordingly. A rig designed for video editing/rendering is not going to be the same as a rig designed for gaming (I prefer a balanced rig)

BTW Kush take a look at these set ups, they are both configured on newegg but some shopping around may save you some money, for me the convenience of being able to ship things back all to the same vendor outweighs much of the money you might save getting parts from 3-4 different ones.

AMD/ATI

Cost: 693.92 @ Newegg

CPU-------> AMD 955BG
SysBoard-> Asus M479XTD EVO
RAM-------> 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600
PSU-------> Antec EA750
HDD-------> Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200RPM
ODD-------> Lite-On CD/DVD RW
GPU-------> HIS H687F1G2M 6870 1GB

Intel/ATI

Cost: 807.92 @ Newegg

CPU-------> i5-2500K
SysBoard-> Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3-B3
RAM-------> 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600
PSU-------> Antec EA750
HDD-------> Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200RPM
ODD-------> Lite-On CD/DVD RW
GPU-------> HIS H687F1G2M 6870 1GB

And Herpes brought up another good point, I always use aftermarket coolers, it really depends on what you want the H70 is a great ALC, and its quiet, it's 105.00 at newegg. I have had no issue out of my 9900 and it keeps my 955 cool, I can't hear it over the sound of my crossfired 4870s @ 100% fan speed, their overclocked too 790MHz core and 1090Mhz RAM they stay at 56c even at 1920x1080 max setting in BlackOps.

I would run with a ASUS motherboard and the suggestion for a larger power supply is a good suggestion. As far as cpu goes since you are building this machine for CS:S it really doesnt matter which cpu you get because the main bottle neck will be the video card.

I've built probably about 20 machines in the last 4 years and NewEgg by far has much better customer service. Their prices recently aren't the best anymore but I don't mind paying a few extra bucks knowing that they have your back.

I would like to point out that this hard drive Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD is not the best for casual/hard core gaming. This is ok for backing up data. You could buy a 3.5" external HD case, pop that in and connect it via USB and use it for data backup purpose.

I advise you to shell out a Western Digital or Seagate ( Seagate were once a self running company, but they now bought Maxtor which makes crappy hard drives) They are now using Maxtor and Seagate parts in their drives, which is even more crappy.

I recommend a western digital hard drive. The best ones are the Black models, they have high cache, faster access times, and are more durable. Best quality imo.

I got a new comp thanks for the input that was given by yall

you know that you can unlock hidden cores on the amd phenom blacks say like the dual core can be unlocked to a quad. but your mobo needs core unlocker. its worked for me Grin lol
