Hello, this helpful guide is for those who can't seem to get that knifing thing down when it comes to 1v1 Final Fights, some douche-bag Bat running around in Deagle5 knifing on AWP round, or the new Knife mod we have in Turbo which strips your gun for a round and forces everyone to be a stabbing little whore like me.
Quick Guides:
1. Right Click, you dumb bastards. Left Click is for Bots and people who are showing off.
2. Never assume that just because it LOOKS like you hit them in the back, means you actually hit them in the back.
3. If you're running at someone with a knife, don't give up. Muscle through their bullets because they're most likely spraying poorly/panicking/or shooting you in the feet for 5 dmg per second
4. This isn't 1.6 anymore. As much as you want it, carrying a knife does not make you faster then someone carrying a machine gun... even though it should. As yes, apparently these guys CAN walk just as fast backwards as they do forwards.
Let's Get Started
Well, the only pointers I can give you is don't ever think you can be good enough to win every round. "Swords" or "Spears" and the odd "Thrown Knife" are generally caused by that annoying factor known as Lag and Ping. Every millisecond counts, and the variation of the exact point when you should swing is continuously changed by latency and your ping to the server. There are, however, different tactics that may help, like strafing and so forth.
The :Bubble"
Through my years of playing, that being from way back in the days of 1.6, I have found out that there is a sort of... Bubble around the player. This is the Hitbox. Don't roll your eyes. I refer to this as the "bubble" because unlike a hitbox, which should move with the player, it sort of sponges around slowly and loosely like Water in a Glass. You move the glass to the side a little and the water will move with it, but with a slight delay. Think of it like this...
[ I ]
The "I" is you and the "[]" is your bubble.
When you stand sill it looks like this: [ I ]
When you're running forward ( ----> ) it looks like this: [ I]
When you're running backwards (<---) it looks like this [I ]
So if I was chasing someone running backwards, then together it would look like this:
---> [ I][ I] --->
As you can see, my knifing bubble is right in front of me where as his, running backwards, is way out in front of him do to that sloshy hitbox.
So when I connect with him, it looks like an impossible reach, even though the "bubbles" are touching and count it as a fair kill.
Your ping and Latency
This is commonly forgotten for some reason, but it's very important.
If you and I were playing and my ping and latency sucked, I would see you running after me like so:
----> [ I] ... [ I] --->
but on your screen, you see it like this:
----> [ I][ I] --->
and that causes the "Spear" and "Thrown Knife" effect.
In fact, this is also the same reason why you are sometimes shot and killed by someone despite going around a corner. On their screen, they've shot and planted that bullet in your heart, but that information took a slower time to register to your computer then it did for you to walk around the corner. Usually a split second occurrence, but fairly common.
So there's no cheating or strategy involved. It's just bubbles and lag that affect the outcome.
Tricks of the Trade
Sometimes you can do tricks, suck as strafing sideways (like I do most of the time) which allows for a sometimes confusing arc motion that causes them to miss due to poor calculation of speed and distance, OR you can do the weird (and fail most of the time) trick of ducking, because they're swinging to high.
A common trick I see (and use) is the Ballsy Rush. It's a commitment trick that even if you know you didn't get the first hit, you have to commit to because you may still win. It's the simply strategy of running balls-out forward into the person, swing for your first hit, and hope they try to run back after theirs. this usually catches them off guard and they don't swing for their second hit in time. This strategy works REALLY well if you chase them into a wall. They won't see it coming, and when they hit the wall, they don't react fast enough for your still running, knife wielding self.
At the same time, if you manage it, you can catch the chaser off guard by running back, allowing them to chase, then abruptly stopping and taking your shot. The chaser usually doesn't expect the sudden stop, or if he is, he's never sure when you're going to do it. In this case, you can get in a good first hit, or a victory from the element of surprise.
Another trick... or possibly obvious, but less known strategy... is to chase the opponent up a flight of stairs or ramp. You see, the hitbox reacts weirdly to height in a way I can't represent through text. All I can say is that they are higher then you, so if you're chasing them up, you can swing and hit them in the legs and feet if you're looking up, but they can't reach you because the swing box is too high unless they ducked... which they never will.
Lastly, in some cases, like in our DeathMatch server, you can be a complete asshole like me and abuse the No Block feature by ignoring the first swing and running right through them, flipping a bitch (turning around) and stabbing them in the back for the one-hit-kill before they even realized what happened.
Closure
All in all, there is no sure fire way to win. Just practice these strategies, and try to see which one works in which situation. Do this, and your Knifing K/D ratio will be amazing like mine.
..now if I could only learn how to use the damn Scout properly...

knife tourney is a great idea except someone has given up almost all the strategies.

I guess I should have added that right click knifing also has a longer reach then left clicking.
If you're chasing someone it's a good idea to right click at them till you hear the hit, and immediately left click. Right clicking slows the victim down and usually they won't turn fast enough before you last your killing left click blow. There's no pause if you hit with a right click and switch to a left, which makes this trick very useful!
Keep in mid, i wouldn't try this in a knife fight or when facing the opponent. Personally, I wish it would go back to 1.6 style. Running with knife should always be faster then running with a damn machine gun!

Yes bailey is somewhat correct...If u want to be a knife pro, u have to know or think you know what your opponet is going to do.whether he is the rushing type or the type to wait for u to make a mistake and rush him. Keep this in mind "YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WIN THEM ALL." Personally, I like to wait for my prey to rush me ,then I make them miss allowing me to make the first stab. Note: the first stab doesnt garuntee the victory, you still have to finish him off to recieve respect and glory. But on another approach if i feel that my opponet is the type that will rush me, I will try to do the same and bring the first blow to ensure my victory.....Note: I have a lag issue so its alot easier for me to sword than others but if u want to be a sword pro, Its all in the timing |

i find that i knife differently and change strategies depending on who im KF with.. if it is someone i play with regularly i pick up on how they knife and change my technique around .. that being said.. i think we should have a knife tourny!!! go best out of 5 for the all rounds except for the final and that would be best of 3.. BTW the only person here that can prob beat me in a best of series would be 211 for some reason that n***a has my number.. other than that no worries for me i meen after ill look at the knife stats in HL weapon stats youll see me up der
