So, I have decided reccently that I most likely want to major in Graphic Design. I am by no means good at it yet. (I realize that if I ever want a job doing it I better get good). So I am curious as to who is (I know there is bound to be one) a Graphic Artist on here. And who is willing to take me under their wing whenever I get my own laptop and programs whenever that ends up happening (could be a while).
post away :]

I have a friend who was a graphic designer out in Cali, but she said she could not handle the stress and gave it up. Said it was a super competitive atmosphere. Good luck to you.
Where's BOB??????

I've worked on several HL2 mods which require skinning, modeling, animating and such, so I guess I am kinda a graphic designer/animator/modeler, but what I do doesn't really cover much besides weapons.
If you don't mind, what kind of design to you want to get into?
(eg: 3D arts, games, software, etc.) |

Do you mean like making logo for company/business uses? Or like programs/applications?
Also, are you drawing them free hand, or with a program? (eg: photoshop, dreamweaver, etc.) |

I'll try to find something or someone to help you, I'm not sure how long it would take though. |

depending on the business/company...
you might be able to design a new webpage to promote the company or simply update an existing one(dreamweaver, flash player, photoshop skillz).
using quark in business would be you making short flash vids of some sort.
almost no free hand usage, only finger clicking.

Working with clients in graphic design is easily the hardest part. Most clients will never understand what goes into producing a logo or a layout, the intricacies of fonts and what effect kerning has on type. When I was in college (which was a while ago, it feels like), I planned on doing something design-related only to realize that the level of respect you get is shockingly low for the quality you can put forth. This is by no means meant to discourage you, but I think it's something you have to be prepared for well in-advance. Expect clients to be like, "Yeah, can you do that for me by Tuesday?" Thick skin a must. |

Shaggy I'm about to say something and by this point in life you should be fully aware that whatever I say will be hopelessly blunt and my personal opinion which I convey as fact.
Anyways, why would you want to be a graphic designer. Have you ever dealt with people before? people suck. You need to make exactly what someone wants even though they can't describe it. Now your dad will agree with me, you should be a doctor.

Pretzel, im not offended.
But, yes.. I have dealt with people. My 2 jobs as of now are: selling tickets at the movie theater and giving samples at costco. I have dealt with PLEANTY of people. I can bullshit and get through a convo with one or a few people I would just love to work away from the masses. lol. And no, I will not be a doctor..one, i dont like school that much. and two, that is dealing with way too many bitchy people. haha

I am going to major in Graphic Design, right now I'm a freshman and taking a career and majors exploration class to be sure it's what I want to do. I'm an artist at heart through and through, and I love being on the computer so Graphic Design is pretty well fit for me.
I suggest first maybe taking an introductory class to see what it's like. They'll give you the basics of the basics on everything from designing packaging to designing cards or even a poster for a band.
If you don't plan on going into advertising with Graphic Design then you should prepare for working from home doing individual projects (like a Studio Artist) or hope you get REALLY good and can get hired by people who want you to make concepts and stuff.
Also, Graphic Design is basically Art on a Computer, so you will have to take a lot of Art classes including Art History and other Studio Art classes to get the degree. Unless you go to a Technical School (cause then you're probably not even takening Gen Eds).
My Career & Majors exploration class provided us with a lot of really great links to websites that help you in seeing what exactly you'd have to do with a job in Graphic Design, the type of schooling they generally want, and all the way down to even what people are hiring Graphic Design and it's popularity/employment rate.
If you want I will link you to one- infact you can search any job title to see all these facts on these sites. There are a few that I have that you can't use because we do a lot of personality tests to see if we're fit for the job, but there are some that you don't need the personality tests for. GL!

Allllrighty. Try O*NET http://online.one....org/find/
One of our assignments in class is to research three majors. We have to ask 7 questions about each and find the answers ourself however we can. O*NET answer most of my questions. It's fairly easy to navigate but if you have any questions feel free to ask!
