Hey guys and gals. So here it is, I have been weighting lifting on and off since I was about 18 (more off then on in the last few years, Ahahahahah). Anyway I have pretty much always worked out from home and have always felt that free weights were the best form of working out over pulley and lever systems. Unfortunately I am now at a crossroads, I do not have enough space for a 100% free weight set up and my current setup lacks enough diversity for my work outs. So I am now considering between adding a lat machine to my current setup, going with a plate load gym or going with a universal gym (plate and pin). This got me to thinking... I know some of you also weight lift and I thought it would be fun to know where you work out (home, gym, work), what type of setups you use (FW, PL, UV), and why you chose these 2 combination.
Look forward to seeing the comments.

honestly man, keep a small set of free weight dumbells, but i found the best to honestly be a bowflex, or a crossbow (bowflex ripoff) Free weights are good, but you lose some resistance when you get momentum. These kind of machines eliminate that and it makes you use all your muscles to keep it going. Thats my two cents. |

I use more free weights. I run, stadium steps, sprint training...actually almost anything i can with a 50lb weight vest. It won't make you look cool, hell it may not even add the muscle you are looking for. Though at the end you will feel it, especially in speed and agility. It is also useful for push ups and sit ups. If i have to i will hit the gym, but that would be for a quick tone/bulk up. It depends what you want? If you want to look jacked then i suggest FW and PL. However, if you want to be fit (improved cardio, reaction, speed, agility and some muscle) I would get a weight vest. Good for abs and all.

Jesus..... slam... what the hell! Well I'm just old.. but damn..... hard core bastard.. making us all look bad! LOL.... impressive you guys. As far as loss of resistance with free weights, that comes down to the lifter. Yeah you can pump out the reps.. .but if you want a true work out, do it all slowly. That's usually where the resistance comes in. I also like just using the weights themselves for workouts outside using a bar or pulley.
With machines, I have found you do get a few more options that I prefered. Example, I have problems with doing squats.... the bar tore me up on my shoulders, I got into the leg press with the weight and pin system. Altough I was limited to a thousand pounds, it was a much better option for me.
There's plusses and minuses for all of it... ultimately freeweights are nice at home as you can adapt for smaller living quarters and use just the weights when needed, where you don't have that with a pully and most structured weight systems. Then there's the storage... yeah... ummm..... freeweights can slide under your bed if needed, a machine...well....
Just a couple cents from the old guy,

Nice guys. I am with Scooby on the resistance thing, I do my reps as slow as possible for max resistance. I actually have and still use the bassics (1 press bench, 1 straight bar, 1 curl bar, 3 dumbell handles, and a total of about 200 to 250lbs of plates). This was always sufficient in the past because I was very active (I worked in the field as an electrician, use to put in 2 to 3hrs of dancing at the clubs, and played sports), but now I am old and I switched to a desk job and dont do any of the other things due to time restrictions. I just find my current system lacks for such things as my triceps, lower back and traps. I also fear I am getting to the point where I should have some kind of auto spotting system, as I work out alone. I have to be careful with lower back exercises as I have a reoccurring back injury that I initially got when I was a second year electrical apprentice. You weighted vest idea sounds good Slam, unfortunately I already carry a 50lb weighted vest with me every day (I am currently 50lbs overweight, used to be 70lbs), so another 50lbs may kill this old guy! Ahahahahaha.

Much can be done with free weights, and remember that when you use the basic major power lifts, you work other muscles. I used to train alot with my brother whom coached olympic style lifters for the olympics, he taught me alot. Dont worry about isolation excersices, stick to power lifts like bench, curls, tricept ext, etc. Also, lift heavy but keet the reps small between 8-12 and 4 sets per muscle group. Keeps the reps slow up and down as you said, and also remember that LESS IS MORE. A 3 day a week routine will do you way more than a 5 that may overwork you. Rest time is when you are gaining from a workout, do alot of resting.

What scooby? Is that really that bad? I'm not what people would say jacked....i'm about 6'4" and 210lbs...So not a muscle man, but those 50lbs coming off the vest sure as shit come in handy in a fight. I went kick boxing and I'm off tempo now...brain needs to catch up to body now...lol

i havent gotten back into the workout thing since i was away at school, however i would say your best combination of anything would be to have a bench (including barbell) as well as dumbells. They offer you the most variety to your workouts and in turn, allow you to hit muscles certain machines simply cant. |
